Hearing the stranger laugh caused Violet to become a little more curious about him. Because of the laugh, Violet had the sense that brothels were probably something normal in his life. And she wasn’t wrong.
“Oh? You expect me to believe that you go to brothels to people watch and not to… partake?” There was no judgment, just curiosity in her voice as she leaned against the wall as they chatted. “If you frequent brothels then this place must be right up your alley.”
“Actually, I went there for the opposite reason. It was one of the few places I could safely go without being expected to… ‘partake’.”
Ambitious Crest-hunters followed him to many, many places to try and catch his eye or co-opt his evening out, but few of them would ever risk the stain to their reputations if they were discovered in a brothel, of all places.
Luckily, his reputation couldn’t get much more stained than it already was and the girls there were often good company if he had enough coin to make it worth their while. Even better if he didn’t want anything more than a few drinks and some conversation.
“But at its core, I suppose the way this place operates isn’t so unfamiliar to me. I’m probably better equipped for it than most. Especially if we’re talking about others from my world. What about you?”
The stranger’s answer just made Violet even more curious about him and what he was about. A brothel as a safe place? Not likely but then that is what made her so curious. Why was it a safe place for him?
“You’re better equipped?” But then there was a pause from Violet as she realized what he had said. “There are others from your world here? Really? I haven’t seen a single person that I might know.” But there were a lot of people and Violet had only just arrived. Maybe others would show up? She wasn’t sure if that was a good or bad thing.
“I’m a dragonrider.” There was pride in her voice. “Sex and brothels aren’t top priority when you’re trying to survive. Well… to some riders at least.”
"You ride dragons in your world?" Sylvain blinks at that, completely distracted from the other topic for the moment. Dragons were basically legends in his world, and worshiped as creatures blessed by the Goddess to boot.
Then again, his one encounter with one had been the massive one that landed atop the Monastery and wrecked everything in a several mile radius so, his impression of the beasts were a little conflicted.
"Although people in my world tend to tame and ride wyverns, so it's not a completely foreign idea, but riding dragons... sounds considerably more dangerous."
Then again, maybe that's why she didn't have time for indulgence after all.
There is a chuckle from Violet at his reaction to her mentioning she was a dragon rider. Being surrounded by other riders day in and day out, sometimes one forgets how it felt before you bonded a dragon. How terrifying and impressive the dragons are and how badass their riders were.
“We bond with a dragon and they are our partners for life.” Speaking of the bond just made Violet miss Tairn and Andarna. It felt like she was missing a very large piece of herself. She couldn’t help but try and reach out to them only to get nothing in response.
There was a small frown at the mention of wyverns. “There is definitely no taming of the dragons in my world. They would incinerate us if we tried.” There was a pause. “You have both dragons and wyverns? Wyverns are just a myth in my world.”
“Dragons are actually thought to be a myth in my world. Or extinct. Which I would have agreed with, up until one almost landed on me in the middle of a battle about five years back.”
His voice is a little dry at that as he spreads his hands in a shrug. “I’m afraid I can’t say more than that about them, because I don’t have any idea where it came from, or where it went afterwards, although it did enough damage that I’m not sure I’d ever want to come face to face with it or any of its relatives again. There was a lot of incinerating, that’s for sure.”
The way the stranger spoke of his dragons made Violet smile because it sounded a lot like the ones from home. They were big, didn’t care who was under them when they landed, and they would incinerate anyone that they thought weak or didn’t like. Talking of dragons made Violet miss home which was an odd feeling because who would have thought she missed constantly fighting for her life?
“Sounds like the dragons that I know.” There was a smile in Violet’s voice. “But you tame wyverns? Aren’t they just as deadly as dragons?” From the folklore that Violet was well versed in wyverns were just as deadly as dragons. Or at least that is what the fables tell her.
"They're... different? Much smaller, for one. A little larger than the pegasi and horses the rest of us mounted troops use. But they're also not as temperamental - or so I'm assuming. One's never tried to set me on fire before, at least. They still very much have attitudes, though, but so do my chargers."
"Most of the riders I've known have raised them from hatchlings, too, so they're close. Maybe that makes them quicker to trust and like us?"
He's clearly not one that rode one himself. He's been up on one a few times - his training classes required at least some experience with them, but Sylvain was better at melee fighting, not ranged or magic, so flying mounts were a bad fit for him.
Violet listened quietly, taking in all the information the stranger was giving him with a small frown on her face. His world was definitely different then her own because for one…
“You have pegasi as well?” Another creature of myth that Violet knows of but not a whole lot about. They were children fairy tales that she had read at least once but not religiously like she had with the venin and wyvern.
“And you raise the wyvern from the egg? Do their parents or the elders not protect them? We have never seen a hatchling dragon. We didn’t even know what a youngling dragon looked like…” And no one but her and Xaden knew what Andarna really was. Thinking of the small golden dragon made Violet’s chest ache and she couldn’t help but reach out only to be disappointed once again.
